Jihva for Jaggery
Indira of Mahanandi's 'Jihva for Ingredients' have been going on since May 2006. And it's my pleasure to host this for the month of December. December has always been my favorite month. It is my birth month and I've noticed a heightened sense of happiness and excitement during this month even after my birthday. That's why I decided to host 'Jihva' for December.
What is Jihvā ? (In Indira's words)
Jihvā, the Sanskrit word means taste, desire and deep longing. This powerful word also represents tongue and taste buds.

For the month of December, I chose 'Jaggery' as the Ingredient. It is also called gur/gud/vellam/bellam etc. It is a very healthy sweetener (and my favorite too) that has wonderful health benefits.
Rules (and a request at the end):
1. The recipe needs to have jaggery in it.
2. Post it on your blog on Dec 1, 2006.
3. Send me an email (tabtomorrow AT gmail DOT com) - the link to your post and a photo of the entry in 75 x 75 pixel size, within a day or two after posting it.
4. Please include the title of post and your blog name.
5. A Request: Now, here's a request from me. It's not one of the rules, but just to make the event more exciting, Can we please try a recipe that we've never tried before? It could be a recipe you've heard or read before and always wanted to try or a new recipe that you've just invented. Well, This is purely optional ofcourse.
I'll do the roundup of all the entries that I receive, by Dec 7, 2006.

Hi Kay - so nice to see you back and blogging. Jaggery has been my all-time favorite too. Will definitely come up with something interesting.
Kay,
You won't believe it. I had chosen 'Cooking with jaggery' as the theme for Meena's FMR for January that I am hosting. Because January is also the month of Makar Sankranti. I have some more themes in mind; I'll choose one of those now.
I am excited about JFI now, because I know what I wanted to make with jaggery for FMR. Makes my job a lot easier. :)
good picture
Welcome back Kay. I like to eat the 'sharkara'( malayalam for jaggery) as it is. Creating a new recipe might be a challenge I can't handle, but I will be there with a dish.
Welcome back girl!
Missed a couple of JFIs, but I'm not gonna miss this one.

HI Kay!!!
Good to have you back!!
I cant wait to see all those sweet recipes!!!
Hi Kay,
Welcome back. Hope you are having a great time with Li'l Meera.
Btw, I've been going thru' the recipes in your archive - you have a lovely collection, many of which I'm familiar with (my dad is from Salem too). I look foward to seeing many such traditional recipes on your blog.
You should consider adding brown sugar to the theme as it is the same as jaggery and it is easily available (and a lot cleaner - without the sandy particles) than jaggery. Just a suggestion.
Happy Birthday!!
I didn't notice this Jihva until now.I probably cannot make it since I am off to a short break next week. But I will try and post a quick one if I can make it by Dec. 7th. Thanks Kay!
Hi anon: Brown sugar is the most ugly version of sugar. First they produce white sugar, and then on several chemical additions, brown sugar is created. It's not jaggery and never will be.
Why don't you do a google or yahoo search before suggesting these things?
Hi Kay,
From the time I started reading about the JFI events.. wanted to participate.. :) With Jaggery as an ingredient hope I should be able to weedle the recipie for one of the those mouth watering sweets my granny makes ...
thanks for hosting such event.
Hi Kay,
I am a new kid on the block and want to participate in JFI.
In the rules you said we should post the recipe on Dec 1st. Is it by Dec 1st or on dec 1st?
-Tweety
Anon, sure, if jaggery isn't available to you, go ahead and make something with brown sugar. Check out cane sugar or demerera sugar from nearby health food stores or organic food stores nearby.
Sumathi, In the world of Internet, everybody has a right of opinion. Whatever the opinion is, it would reach the other person better, if the opinion is conveyed in a gentle way.
Tweety, acc. to the rules, you have to post the recipe on your blog ON Dec 1rst. but, if that's not possible, you can post it BY Dec 1rst. :)
Great Idea and thanks for hosting. Will sure take part. Waiting to see the array of sweet delights.
Congrats Kay and Thanks for hosting this event inspite of being a very busy mommy
May your motherhood be filled with the sweetness & richness, same as your chosen ingredient Jaggery :)
Hey Kay, When I read that the theme for your Jihva was Jaggery I was really tempted to participate but unfortunately I can't because I saw it too late. But I have something for you. There is a post on my blog which is called Tip of The Week in which I had shared with my readers how they can easily break down a big slab of Jaggery within seconds with the help of the microwave. The link is www.food-n-more.blogspot.com/2006/07/Tip-of-week Check it out if you wish and you could add that to your Round-up
